1. Low-temperature battery cells
The reason standard lithium-ion batteries have difficulty operating and charging at temperatures below 0°C is because the lithium ions are less likely to be absorbed by the graphite anode and condense as lithium metal. When lithium metal condenses, dendrites form that can penetrate the separator between the cathode and anode which leads to an internal short circuit.
In China, there are two common battery cells - Lithium Titanate Oxide batteries (LTOs) and Sodium-ion batteries(SBIs) which can handle this issue.
- For LTO batteries, because its anode takes Titanate Oxide instead of Carbon, which greatly improves the performance during fierce weather ( can still help hold 50% of capacity under minus 30 Celsius degrees).
- For Sodium-ion batteries, according to some essays, due to its rich resource on earth, and super performance during extrem weathers, "Even at -70 °C, this battery still delivers 70.19 % of the room-temperature capacity. Furthermore, benefitting from the high boiling point of the electrolyte, this battery also works well at a high temperature of up to 100 °C. These results are encouraging for the further exploration of wide-temperature range SIBs."
2. Heating pad technology
- Comparing to LTO batteries' expensive cost and Sodium-ion batteries' low energy density, taking a physical method to improve the lithium-ion batteries' performance sounds more practical.
- Research and study on Sodium batteries are still ongoing, customers will still need more reliable application cases.
- The cost of heating pad technology will be around 500 CNY to 900 CNY extra per battery pack, which is still in a reasonable range.
- The only negative effect is that every battery pack takes heating technology will have to set 20% of capacity aside for charging the pads.
